A VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and it is a service that provides more security when you're connected to the internet.
In essence, a VPN masks your IP address and encrypts your data when you go online while shielding your data to your ISP (Internet Service Provider). As ISPs can track what you do online, such as the sites you visit and how long you spend online etc., a VPN keeps your identity safe and your internet activity private. Without a VPN, the data sent between you and your ISP is not encrypted, which can leave you vulnerable to anyone who wants to view your online activity.
VPNs work by routing your devices' internet connection via a private server instead of your ISP, and because your internet browsing is being routed, your personal information such as your IP address does not show up to third parties - instead they will only see the information related to the VPNs address.
Some benefits of using a VPN
Use public Wi-Fi safely - most public Wi-Fi connections are open and not password protected, leaving you at risk of your connection being intercepted by hackers. Using a VPN to connect to public Wi-Fi hides your identity on an open internet connection.
Access blocked content - some people in certain countries with strict internet controls may not be able to visit certain websites. A VPN can make it appear as if you are located in a different country by cloaking your actual location and IP address. Also, if you're travelling to another country a VPN gives you access to what you would normally have online back home.
Avoid slow internet speeds - using a VPN prevents ISPs from deliberately slowing down IP speeds at peak times, which can affect streaming or gaming.
Find better online deals - when using a VPN you can avoid price hikes on hotels, flights and shopping by changing your virtual location.
How to use a VPN
It's easy to get started with using a VPN. There are many providers out there, such as Proton VPN or Nord VPN, for example. When you've decided on your provider and have created your account, all that's needed is to download the VPN app on your device. When you've signed in, normally, you choose from a list of remote servers located around the globe. Select the one you like, and it should connect you automatically. Once connected, browse the net as you would normally do without a VPN.
